BBC and Lineker sink to new lows

The behaviour of Stoke fans was bad enough yesterday in itself.  Aaron Ramsey was abused by a majority of brainless Stoke fans for daring to have his leg broken by the aggressive Ryan Shawcross' reckless tackling, while Arsene Wenger was abused by the Stoke fans in that classless manner that is sometimes tinged with a rather significant dose of xenophobia.

The coverage of events on the BBC's Match of the Day was biased and offensive.  They largely ignored the shameful abuse dished out to Ramsey and made a joke of Arsene Wenger being abused by Stoke fans.  Then at the end of the program, Gary Lineker did his Arsene Wenger 'impression'.

I have to say, words almost fail me, it was childish, offensive and utterly pathetic from a grown man who really should know a lot better.   There was also a rather unpleasant streak of xenophobia running through Lineker's mocking of Arsene Wenger.  It is a disgrace that a public sector broadcaster such as the BBC, which is meant to be impartial, should cover events in such a partisan fashion and allow a presenter to mock a manager in such a fashion.

It was a new low for Lineker and the BBC in my opinion.  I have complained and would urge everyone else to do the same, make sure you mention the failure to cover the Ramsey abuse and Lineker's offensive 'impression'.  Lineker should lose his job for this, no impartial presenter should behave in such a deplorable manner, it was utterly shameful.

hmmm... isn't Linekar the one who complained about the school his school attends, saying that the school failed to prepare his son properly for the university entrance exams? Inasmuch as IQ is something that is to a large degree inherited, maybe Linekar should take a long look in the mirror to see who is to blame. He may have been a good striker, perhaps even great, ... but what an absolute idiot. And somebody like him is supposed to be representing British culture? HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Anonymous said...

... instead of "school his school" it should read "school his son attends", ... sorry!

Lineker's son did very badly because he is a lazy spoilt little idiot and they then tried to sue the school!

At best it was a poorly judged joke that trivialised the serious undercurrent of abuse Arsene constantly has to put up with, at worst it was xenophobic & served to reinforce the bottom-feeders' views that their hateful abuse is acceptable.

I have long stopped watching MOTD, can't stand Lineker, Hansen or Lawro. They'd have to ask themselves if they would mock British managers like Ferguson, Redknapp or Dalglish. I expect the answer might be a bit uncomfortable.

Anonymous said...

I think you're being a little precious here. I'm sure Wenger himself doesn't really care. He doesn't exactly represent our club very well with his continuous touchline histrionics. I don't think it helps the players either. Maybe Wenger should behave with more dignity on the touchline, then people wouldn't be able to mock him.

I am a gooner and think you need to get your facts right before berating anybody. Watch motd again. Hansen actually says that though he thinks a lot of the stoke fans that their booing of Ramsey was shameful. They then mentioned stokes berating of Wenger and how he took it in good Humour. Lineker's comment was tongue in cheek so please get a grip and even if it was meant to be something else do you believe Wenger will give a damn no I doubt it at all he won,t give it a second thought so get on with supporting team in last two games of season

Anonymous said...

I agree Linekar showed his bias, but it's wrong to say they ignored the treatment of Ramsey. They specifically addressed it and said there is no place for it in football. However, I cannot remember ever seeing another manager ridiculed on the programme. They have sunk to a new low, but I suspect it is symptomatic of the media and fans position with Arsene. He would have to win the Championship to repair it.

Had this been a slight on Liverpool FC the level of disgust would have been massive.. So I think we are right to complain to the bbc!! About time someone at MOTD is given a reminder that you can't keep going on about 'them foreigners' as though they are from another planet. It is 2012 and while I don't want to get too precious - are those 3 relics of the 80's (Lineker, Lawro and Hansen) the best we have???

Oh i think lineker's bias has something to do with it. As for not taking mickey out of other managers I don't thinkthe bbc has ever seen too many fans have ever been seen taking the piss out of the opposing manager like that on such a scale so thought they make a point on the issue.

anons 1046 and 1048

I am sorry but I have got my facts right.

Hansen did criticise the Stoke supporters for their shameful abuse of Ramsey.

Other than this, they generally mocked Arsene Wenger, stated how great the Stoke fans are on the whole and did not cover things in an impartial manner.

The mocking at the end was symptomatic of their generally mocking tone, they didn't highlight the abuse of Ramsey in the game highlights, they didn't even mention it! They also tried to make out that all the abuse Arsene gets is just good natured banter.

Utterly shameful coverage and given away by them saying how great Stoke fans are, before criticising them for their deplorable Ramsey abuse, an inconsistency or just the BBC not calling a spade a spade? The latter for me, Stoke fans are pretty low.

If you look at Hansen's face though he was pretty disgusted with the booing of Aaron Ramsey. I agree Lineker shouldn't have done it but it was done light-heartedly and Wenger won't exactly be taking note of it. He will be more worried about whether Aaron Ramsey's confidence, already appearing low thanks to a dip in form, has taken a hit.

Instead lets salute Wenger for the comment 'The linesman did not see it' and the sly smile he gave that the commentator was too dumb to notice.

Anonymous said...

Have lodged my complaint. Lineker and co. are a sarcastic mob and I'm sure if one were to do research on their coverage of certain teams and managers the meaning of impartial commentary would take on a rather different note.

Ieuan said...

I'm an avid Arsenal fan and I disagree. The abuse of Ramsey was entirely unacceptable and I feel that MOTD should perhaps have made more of a point of it than they did. However, the mocking of Wenger was just a bit of sillyness and to group the two together just undermines the case against Stoke vis-a-vis Ramsey. Gary Lineker, in this, might have inadvertently given force to the notion that you can justifiably abuse managers (and I don't count silly imitations as abuse but rather the foul language and insults that will surely go with it) but to single this out as xenophobic, Wenger-specific criticism is really extreme. Just gives all those other fans more material to argue that Arsenal fans are always complaining! Was a bit of silly fun so have a laugh and rise above it. Bit of common sense please.

Nail on head, trivialising the mocking is not something that should be done for the above reasons.

How can someone on here say Wenger disgraces the Arsenal with his touchline antics.

Pullis dresses like a Sunday morning pub Manager or some Chav from Little Britain.

How about the wonderfull moaninio when he goes into one or even the great Pep Guardiola. They are ok to behave like this are they?

The truth is Wenger gets more stick and hatred just because He is French.

I am as patriotic as any other Englishmen but we English used to be known for our class not a bunch of apes dancing around throwing hatred and abuse.

As for MotD all the pundits hate the Arsenal on there. We ruined them Liverpool players dominance and they will never forget this and Lineker is just bitter that his friend Smithy chose the right London Club to play for.

Arsenal has a Club suffers more because our Manager happens to be French yet there is just as much hatred between England and the Scots, more from them mind.

More serious were the alledged chants of "French tw*t" aimed at wenger before the game. I didn't hear them (didn't get to see it), but heard an interview that they put on TalkSport in which one of the journalists was questioning him about this alledged "racial" abuse (although I don't see how it's racial). I wonder if anyone else heard chanting of this kind during or before the game?
Also I thought they were chanting "Wenger is a w*nker" during the match? It wasn't very clear, but this is perhaps less shocking, seeing as the referees have to take such abuse on a very regular basis.

it is clearly racist behaviour !
we cant change the morons who abuse like that, some of ours do it too. my real issue is with Lineker and the bbc for allowing this.
it is this type of behaviour that allows and condones the actions of the type of manager like pulis or mcleish.
i know that shawcross was doing an old fashioned clear out tackle but it is for the bbc to say that and not hide behind the view that it is english football, and arsenal have to compete.
If stoke had done this to norwich or swansea there would be uproar in the bbc!
Lineker implies that arsenal and wenger are pussies. what was he? how loud would he be shouting if he had had shawcross launching him?
back in the day, you steeled yourself against such tackles but nowdays there is no place for it.
pulis and mccleish are all thats wrong with football and swansea, wigan, reading, norwich even spurs are all thats right.
Lineker gives permission to wankers to keep on abusing any individual.
Lineker, the most boring bland arse that ever drew breath..

I am not accusing Lineker of being racist, just saying in my opinion from the tone of his words and from the content, there was a streak of xenophobia in there.

The cackling of laughter at it from around the studio was pretty low as well, it was a nasty kind of bullying act, really pathetic from such a major public broadcaster.

Also the Stoke chanting of 'French tw*t' is clearly racist and completely unacceptable.

To all the Stoke fans who seem to enjoy persisting with your purile childish insults, please continue, it gives me a great deal of pleasure to remove your largely illiterate drivel from the blog, thanks for the fun!

I am sorry I just disagree with you on this.

The more I watch it the more offensive and unacceptable it looks.

Lineker is acting like a nasty playground bully and the background sniggers show his co-presenters were joining in with the small minded bullying.

It is easy to write nasty bullying like this off as 'just a joke' or 'just banter', I think this is a dishonest way of trying to hide a nasty and unpleasant bit of bullying.

Put yourself in Arsene's shoes, it is unaccaptable mocking from a supposedly impartial broadcaster.

As one of the Anon says above there is a hint of xenophobia 'sod off to your own country' in it too, it really is unpleasant.

I am not angry, I am not over reacting, I just feel complaining is the right thing to do on this and Lineker was bang out of line.

To the people citing the Adebayor chants, I condemn these wholeheartedly and will not pretend that all Arsenal fans are angels, in fact I have been involved in some nasty incidents for openly criticising fellow Arsenal fans at games on this.

The difference is that this was a small minority of Arsenal fans chanting and the vast majority are fighting to condemn and stamp out this shocking behaviour.

As regards Stoke and Ramsey, barely a single Stoke fan as apologise or even acknolwedged it was out of line, plus it was a majority of fans involved.

Big differences and I condemn both.

Is it easier that he is French? If there were any humour there I would have let Lineker off but he wasn't laughing and he was encouraging Stoke and other fans to be idiots. So he wasn't right.

I am complaining about the clear abuse the Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger had from your presenter Gary Liniker ,
Mr. Wenger was clearly verbally abused throughout the match by Stoke City fans calling him a "wanker" who then went on to imitate him throwing their arms around foolishly .They also hissed a booed a player who suffered a broken led as a result of a wreck-less challenge from a previous encounter between the two clubs .
My complaint is about Mr Liniker when commenting on Mr Wenger throws his arms around foolishly and mocks him in a racist way ,I believe this to be totally unacceptable from a presenter from The BBC(my complaint)Arsene should do a fergie and fuck their interviews !

Dear BBC Sir,

I wish to complain most wholeheartedly about the disgusting output witnessed on Match of the Day this weekend.

I talk, of course, of the most disgusting and vile racism exhibited by on Mr. Gary Lineker. I have never seen such vile racism since John Terry visited a Tennesse Fried Chicken in Brixton.

The last of the good chavelier that is Arsene Wenger deserves to be more well respected. He has given many, many, many, many, many, many years of service to French football since the years before Mr. Lineker was eating tiger genetials in Tokyo.

I feel, more importantly, that as Arsenal fans we have been cruely taregted once again by the evil Spuds supporting BBC. You will not hear this sort of insult directed towards the arch criminal and thief that is Henry Redknapp. That evil and loathsome human being keeps receiving the plaudits despite not even being able to aquire the England job.

Mr. Wenger is treated like he is Hitler.

He is treated like he is Stalin.

He is treated like he is Pol Pot.

Hell, he is even treated like he is the McDonalds Hamburgler.

Is this fair? You decide.

In the meantime I am going to tuck into my chipolata sandwich while I expect your grovelling response.

Journalists of Satan. The lot of you.

A loyal Gunner.

I'm not happy about the way Arsene Wenger was mocked on MOTD this saturday. Gary Lineker's impression was offensive. Would he immitate an Indian, Jamaican or someone who is camp? I certainly dont think he is that brave. He knows mocking someone who is French is "Fair game" and very safe. I think Arsene Wenger deserves a lot more respect from your main football and sports presenter. I cant imagine Des Lynham or David Coleman acting so childish. If Gary Lineker feels the need for cheap laughs at other people expense I am sure the BBC can find a late night slot for him on BBC3.

Thank you for contacting us about the edition of ‘Match of the Day’ broadcast on Saturday 28 April.

Gary Lineker's closing line was a light-hearted reference to shots of Stoke fans behind the dugouts imitating Arsene Wenger's mannerisms. A clear differentiation was made between this and the booing of Aaron Ramsey which Gary Lineker and Alan Hansen strongly condemned.

In addition, Gary was not being xenophobic nor was he unfairly singling out a manager who has the admiration and respect of the whole ‘Match of the Day’ team and who has been the subject of praise on the show on many occasions.

Shots of football managers and their behaviour on the touchline have long been a source of good-natured humour across our output and elsewhere. However, we are sorry if we have inadvertently offended you.

I’d like to assure you I've registered your complaint on our audience log. This is an internal report of audience feedback which we compile daily and is available for viewing by all our staff. This includes all programme makers and presenters, along with our senior management. It ensures that your points, along with all other comments we receive, are considered across the BBC.

Thanks again for taking the time to contact us.

i complained and wrote it was xenophobic, and gave credence to the boorish behaviour of the Stoke fans whos offensive chants and gestures being imitated by Lineker came across that he supported their behaviour. I also indicated it was unprofessional to mimick one of the most respected elder managers in world football, who happened to be foreign. the least i expected from the programme was neutrality. And i have yet to see Lineker mock any other managers, which he shouldnt anyway as its unprofessional. I also closed it that i expect an apology on next weeks programme.
