The Great Debate

Morning all. But frankly speaking, its not a good morning. Its bloody cold, again, and I am sick to death with all the anti-Arsenal bullshit in the papers and on a lot of websites. Arsene Wenger has given our Club riches and success beyond our dreams, but I think we are now seeing the second and third generation of fans who have joined the good cause in the Wenger years. Spoilt and over privileged children, drawn in by the glamour and success of 3 Premierleague trophies, 4 FA Cups and near misses in the Champions League and UEFA Cups, who now sit screaming outside the gates for more of the same like its their God given right. Well sometimes, you just can't have it.

There is a epidemic of derisory comments directed at the moment to Arsene Wenger and his team. Players like Song, Denilson, Diaby, Eboue have got it in spades this year. For the first time in my life, I was present to witness Arsenal fans booing one of their own players during a game. None of the players deserve it, not even Eboue, but for a large number of people, the Eboue incident did not go far enough it seems.

Now, to be clear, I don't think the current Arsenal team is up to much in terms of Wenger teams. But its actually not bad in the greater scheme of things and who knows, we may just fluke it in one of the Cup competitions this year.

But there is so much stupidity flying around in Wenger's direction. So lets get back to basics. There is money available at Arsenal to buy players. Maybe not Kaka, but most others you care to think of. However, the Club is quite rightly determined to run itself as a business and not expose itself to risk of financial collapse. A very good idea in these dark times. On top of that, Wenger has almost always adopted a policy on transfers that avoids spending big money on fashionable names that would please the tabloids. Indeed, he has a reputation for locating unknown gems.

I therefore have no doubts that if the right player was available at the right price, then Arsene would have signed them. He has always done it in the past. However, I see no reason whatsoever for him to start signing either the wrong player (at the right price) or spending the wrong price. We also have no idea whether Alonso was actually available (and I think he is crap anyway), or how much Arshavin actually wants to come to Arsenal. But these players are no saviours for our season. I honestly also believe that Denilson has the potential to be a great player. Song also has potential, but then I like the grafters. I am not going to say anything about Eboue.

Now, I can also understand that its frustrating that we are 5th at the moment and are not going to win the league. We are even going to face a battle for 4th place. But I am proud to support Arsenal in that fight and fully expect that we will do it. Chelsea and Liverpool are in a pit themselves. I don't think 2nd place is out of the question.

Anyone who doesn't want to support Arsenal to try and be as successful as possible this season can fuck off and do something else.

Agree 100% with everything you say.

The interesting thing is trying to understand the difference in reactions.

It is highly possible that there are simply "new" fans who thought it would be Doubles all the way, and are now thinking they have made the wrong choice in supporting the Arsenal.

But there do seem to be a lot of older fans venting. These guys have been through the success and doldrums of the Graham era (and maybe before). But now they "have had enough" of the "disgrace" that Wenger is unleashing on the club. Don't really know why.

It's possible that life has just got so shit for so many people, that they are so desperate to see some success in their footballing lives and they will shit on anything to achieve it?

Is it the same at other clubs? What are Spurs/Scousers fans thinking at the moment? Is it only Mancs who are actually vocally happy? And what do you do if you're a Citeh fan? Or a Pompey fan - FA cup win then relegated....

Is it possible that every set of fans all over the country is as bitter as Gooners, or are we the bitterest most sour-faced bunch of moaning doom-loving bastards ever.

Tough to say, but I think Arsenal fans are worse than most at the moment. However, give it a couple of weeks and the Scousers will be booing Rafa, Chelsea will be falling apart, and Adams will have been sacked at Pompey.

Just had a look on the BBC website and so far today;

12pm - Sky reveal Arsenal have obtained work permit for Arshavin
2pm - Wenger denies the above and says we have not even agreed a fee or requested for a work permit!!!

This one really takes the biscuit.

Good day Obsinho and Ted.

What say we talk about the match v. West Ham?

How do you think we will line up since the Cardiff City match comes quickly after?

Any key match ups?

I would like to see us attack them from the off for the first 15 minutes. Get after them when they're in possession and force errant passes. Take a few shots from outside the 18 and work the bye line from the wings to unsettle them.

Rumours of Vela to Pompey and Toure to Citeh. I hope not on both accounts. But I do find it peculiar that Toure was left on the bench v. Toffees. Does that seem strange to anyone else?

Against West Ham, we'll line up exactly as we did against Everton. Although maybe EBoue will start?

I think Vela and Bendtner will come on on 65 when the Hammers are tired, and we should close the game out.

The treatment of Toure is odd - Wenger has clearly lost faith in him. But Gallas is better in the air, and against Everton that is what you need. On the whole he did quite well, other than leaving CLichy to deal with Cahill once.

I wouldn't expect to see Toure start while Gallas is fit. A swap of Toure for Richards plus cash seems quite Wenger. Richards is cheaper now than when he was playing well, but that doesn't mean he is suddenly a bad player.

Good idea Rhino. Its a long time since we smashed a team to bits in the first half, and its long overdue.

Given that we started the season with Walcott and Nasri on the wings, its about time for Vela to be given a chance out there I feel. However, I also would not be surprised to see Eboue come back into the side.

For some reason, probably having vented a good dose of spleen on the posting, I feel pretty confident we will beat them 3-1 tomorrow.

I'd like to see Vela start with RVP. Adebayor on the bench. Bring him on later if needed. It would be nice if we could take a 2 goal lead and give Wilshere 20 minutes at the end too. I guess I'm getting delusional now :-)

I'd rather swap Gallas for Richards. Toure is coming to an age where defenders are often at their best. I'm not disagreeing about Gallas being better than Toure in some regards. But I would be disturbed if we sold Toure.

Off the subject, but I'm interested in opinions about Coquelin. Have any of you seen him play? He seems quite a terrier, and he is skilled on the ball. He seems to like having a pop at goal as well. I've been impressed and I'm anxious to see him around the first team. I know he is young still, but could he be our Flamini replacement in the future? He's recently been deployed at RB in the reserves and coped well. Stood out even. But I would like to see him develop in CM. I suspect Randall may move on this summer and open up a place in CM for Coquelin and/or Lansbury.

Amen.
Lets get 3 against West Ham and move on.

We'll in if Adebayor turns up.

We'd have beaten Cardiff, and certainly have given more scraes to Everton if RVP wasn't on hiw own up there.

I know he has been excused for bad service, but in Ade's case I think he is making it hard to get good service. Playing quick passes to feet works if you have movement up front - Ade has been static in games. So it's hard to find a pass to him.

Don't have ATV so haven't seen much of Coquelin. He looks good but there have been so many young hopefuls that I'm not going to put too much faith in him yet.

evening all.

firstly well said that man ted, nail firmly banged into a few people's rather numb skulls.

secondly on the spoilt fan business, i think it's only a minority of buffoons but this minority is rather vocal, this it appears bigger than it is,

the quiet sensible rational gooner is not heard amongst their moronic childlike din, while the morons love to bully and intimidate people into ageeing with them, they are small small weeners whose logic is as robust as ledley king's flimsy body or rosicky's tatty hamstrings,

as can be witnessed on a certain le blog's comments section, there are a few utter cretins in this world and unfortunately a few of them are Arsenal fans, as cash can be hard to find in a recession, common sense and reason are similarly hard to find in certain unpleasant public internet toilets,

as regards saturday, I would play either Bendtner or Ade, we need someone with a bit of presence, however I'd definitely start with Vela on the left flank, we need some more width and directness, I'd then stick Nasri on the right with Diaby and Denilson in the middle,

finally what is wrong with this bunch of negative bastards? everything is spun in a negative manner, it's almost bizarre, I cannot beleive they are Arsenal supporters, it's almost as if they have dug their hole so deep they have to keep on going,

what would be really great is if the lads could put a great run together now to shut them up,

having said that enough of them were whinging last year after we almost won the leage, some people do not deserve what they have got

I would be in favour of Adebayor starting if he was working hard on the pitch. But he seems like he can't be bothered, so I'd like to see him shown that his place isn't guaranteed.

I would be happy to see Bendtner partner RVP so long as Vela is on the wing. I really want to see Vela get a start against WHU.

Back to Adebayor. He hasn't received the service he had last season. But that doesn't fully excuse his performances. What I find extremely frustrating is when he has his back to goal and a pass comes into him, he one touch pings it right back out to the player that just passed it to him. It's not just occasionally, he has this infuriating proclivity towards doing that.

That said, his team mates aren't exactly buzzing around and finding openings for him to touch it off too either.

Ade is another one who has had a tough time, yet he has almost scored the same number of goals as RVP. It's a fine line between shite and great. Ted

Hii ,

Well , there are certain people who always wants silverware . They say they want to see trophies instead of playing just beautiful football .

These are the people who r spreading all the negativity about arsene wenger . I dont agree with them .Arsenal has always associated with beautiful football that we play...other clubs envy us . Well this year we have been lil bit unlucky too....our 3 main players left us , our 3 main players got injured.....if Cesc , Theo < tomas , Eudardo wre still playing..things could have been very different .

Against West Ham......i want Vela to start for sure.....vela , RVP and ade and Bendtner can come later on and i want to see Toure defending !!

Arsenal: Almunia, Sagna, Toure, Gallas, Clichy, Eboue, Diaby, Denilson, Nasri, Adebayor, Bendtner. Subs: Fabianski, Van Persie, Vela, Ramsey, Song Billong, Djourou, Gibbs.

Not really the lineup I was hoping for....

Come on you GUNNERS!
